Gold Tips

Auctioneer is the backbone of most every merchant’s tool arsenal. In short, it is a convenient ingame addon that build an information database of the auctions from a player’s server. In just a few minutes, Auctioneer can make a complete list of items available and prices at which those items are being sold. As a player performs more scans, this information gradually becomes more and more accurate.

If a player regularly scans their Auction House at least once per day, Auctioneer will virtually be able to predict any given item’s accurate market price.

Daily Quests are one of the most overlooked gold farming methods in the game. Some players find them tedious while others just don’t realize the profit margin that they are missing out on. Regardless of the excuse, there’s no reason to put your dailies on the backburner.

Dailies aren’t just for gold, either. They can give out some pretty nice rewards that will make your life a lot easier later on. Reputation with various factions is pretty much a neccecity if you’re going to be a big player in the Auction House.

One really neat trick to making gold off Inscription is by creating Darkmoon Faire decks on the cheap. A lot of players don’t bother with them, but that’s what makes this a great opportunity for those of us who see the potential!

Putting in about 10kg each (the lowest amount was around 8k), I created three Volcano decks alongside one Hurricane Deck. Because I’ve currently rolled a mage, I only actually sold three of these decks. With just these three decks, I made a total profit of around 42,600g.

Since the beginning of cataclysm, Archaeology has been somewhat shunned by the gold farming community. This is partially due to the nature of the profession–it can be pretty tedious at times–and then also because it has gotten a bad reputation as a gold sink.

Despite all beliefs otherwise, Archaeology can actually be a pretty decent gold farming opportunity!

One of the better ways to make some extra gold with Alchemy is by selling vanity items–particularly if you’re going to show off a little to draw in customers. These items can do anything from turning your into stone to making you grow to outrageous sizes, and they are pretty fun to use and abuse in towns.

There’s quite a few vanity items out there, but I’m going to be focusing on what I consider to be the three most profitable. These items are all both easy to craft and sell very quickly.

As much ingame as in real life, fear can be a powerful demotivator when faced with risks. I find that one of the biggest problems that new merchants have is the unwavering fear of losing gold in the Auction House. These players will often freeze when faced with a purchasing decision, or sometimes will avoid the Auction House altogether.

Arbitrage. Some merchants live by it, some merchants fear it, and some merchants have no idea what it even is. Arbitrage is, simply, the act of grabbing items from an opposing faction’s Auction House (or neutral Auction House) to sell on your own faction’s Auction House–or the opposite.

One profession that a lot of players are overlooking with the advent of Cataclysm is fishing. For most players, this profession is either a hate it or love it way of making gold. I’d like to say that there’s some middle ground here, but it’s pretty much a dead stop between the two.

One of the big business makers here lately has been Obsidium Ore—and if you’ve been missing out, it’s not too late to get into the game. Depending on your server, it’s pretty easy to buy at around 60-65g per stack for about 6000g total investment into around 15000g just by prospection alone.

There’s an insane amount of gold to be made with Obsidium Ore, but a lot of merchants too lazy to do anything other than flip it raw—leaving a potential gold mine for those players fortunate enough to know how to use this to their advantage.

One of the most profitable Auction House ventures that I have had so far in Cataclysm has been the selling and buying of WOTLK items. A lot of players are farming Cataclysm right now without even realizing the goldmine they may have sitting on their bank alts.

More specifically, I’ve been selling off meta-gems and glyphs, “standard” old-world items. These are items that, at times, could take a ridiculous amount of time to sell in WOTLK but are selling very well now.
